Weaves of India - Exploring the Sari landscape of India!

Today, we are going to explore the textile heritage of India through a showcase of gorgeous weaves from across the country. Most online articles trace the origins of our textile traditions back to the Indus Valley civilization. Textiles were extensively traded much like our spices back then and today our rich textiles are immensely favored by world- designers!

I am a fashion purist! A big believer of time-tested classic styles, if you will. Transient trends such as the net saris and sequined petticoats do not cut it for me.  And therefore, I am on a personal fashion mission to collect saris from all over India simply for the love of varied textures, fine weaves, striking hues and intricate motifs.
I have only begun and it  has already been a  fascinating exercise! I believe the sari is the greatest ode to our fabulous textile heritage and perhaps the longest fashion trend known to man! It is a forceful ideogram of my cultural identity and a resilient symbol of our sundry textile industry. So, dear Aalayam readers, sit back and take delight as I whisk you away on an aesthetic journey to discover the fabric landscape of India.

ILKAL:
The lesser known Ilkal sari which originated in the Bagalkot region of North Karnataka features the unique Tope Teni weaving and the Kasuti (hand) embroidery (via wiki).  The distinctive red/maroon border on these saris adds a tribal flair and  makes the ilkal refreshing in its modesty and rustic appeal. The Ikal sari holds a dear place in my heart as this was the first sari that my husband bought for me many moons ago and exemplifies the loving bond we share.  Over the years, I have added two more exquisite Ilkals to my stock, handpicked by my mother-in-law.  And for this cherished association, the Ilkal is highlighted first on this list!

KANJEEVARAM:
What can I say! Some of you probably remember that I did an entire post on the kanjeevaram sari  and here is an excerpt  "The kanjeevaram sari is a piece of art and I have remained a diehard Kanjeevaram loyalist till date. Every South Indian girl holds the Kanchi pattu close to her heart. After all, it is a part of her bridal trousseau! And for me, the kanjeevaram sari has been de rigueur at every other celebration as well! My fondness for the sari is well known!"
On a recent trip to India, I crumbled (miserably) under pressure - the pressure of having to walk away from breath takingly beautiful kanchi saris. I had resolved to buy just one since I was intent on buying other saris from across the country. But my resolve melted the minute I stood in front of a beautiful row of neatly stacked  opulent kanchi saris and eventually I walked out of the store with 4 gorgeous kanchis, a happy camper! Ageless in quality and timeless in style, the kanjeevaram silk  reigns supreme

KERALA KASAVU:

I don't know of any other sari  that can match the enduring elegance of the Kerala Kasavu. No, really! The tranquil ivory tone complimented by the luxe gold border of the kasavu sari has been a cultural trademark of the gorgeous women of Kerala from times immemorial and holds its appeal even today. If you are a sari aficionado, then your bank would be incomplete without the Kasavu.

MYSORE SILK:
The art of draping a sari is as interesting as the diverse textile heritage itself. If there is one sari that allows for a perfect drape then it is the Mysore Silk. I love the way it makes me feel!  Emanating from the land of the Maharajahs, the Mysore silk is indeed aristocratic in its appearance. Known for its texture and luster, the resplendent Mysore silk is a seemly tribute to legendary Mysore.  As you get ready to display your Jambu Savari for this year's Golu, why not celebrate in a traditional Mysore silk sari ? Displayed in the picture is another personal favorite - a gift that is a token of my pregnancy and a reminder of many treasured emotions!

PATOLA:

Patola is a splendid example of hand-woven artistry. The weaver implements a double ikkat weave to turn  the Patola sari into an impressive piece of art replete with geometric designs and intense hues. Did you happen to catch the stills from Lakme fashion week this year.Designer Gaurang Shah's repertoire was jaw droppingly gorgeous. He worked with Patan patola as his medium and chose to don his show stopper kirron kher (yes, the ultimate sari diva herself) in a stunning Navrathan Patola.
I love the handwoven texture on mine- I think it makes the sari exotic!

BATIK:
Another sari, another dyeing technique! The Javanese wax-resistant dyeing technique or the Batik dye adds splashes of color and a boho-chic vibe to the Indian six yards. This bold Batik in complimentary colors is from my 8o year old grandmother's closet which is now a precious addition to my sari collection. Fashion trends are cyclical and so the Batik is back! I can always upcycle my grandmother's conventional sari with an edgy accessory for an updated look!

POCHAMPALLY:
So, what is the connection between a global design trend and a tiny village in Andhra Pradesh, India? A dyeing and weaving style known as Ikat. The pochampally sari is fashioned in the Ikat style and could very well be the Patola's twin. However, regional influences separate the two. This too belongs to my grandmother. This was my way of bringing a part of her here to my home. I regret that I never brought her here to visit us. She is frail now and cannot make a trans-atlantic trip. The saris will always serve as a reminder of my grandmom's simple yet impeccable sense of style that I am grateful to have inherited. Her tenacious spirit belies her frail health much like the Pochampally itself whose vibrant colors and striking patterns mask the signs of wear.

ZARDOSI:
If you are looking for an avant garde fashion statement then the zardosi embroidery is it! Sported by most Indian runway models and bollywood heroines, elaborate zardosi embroidery gives the sari an opulent up-do! Zardosi=haute couture! Zardosi work involves embroidering with metallic threads to add a generous dose of sparkle and we love that in our wedding and festive finery, don't we?

KANTHA:
Out next stop on the textile tour is Bengal. The intricate Kantha embroidery, a hot favorite world over, is from Bengal. Fashion for me is about being true to who you are.  I believe in details and nothing beats the sophisticated detailing of the kantha embroidery. A silk Kantha is subtle and classy and adds a refined elegance no matter what the occasion. I can see myself wearing a Kantha sari to a western gala, a soiree, a banquet or a cocktail hour!

TUSSAR SILK
A weaver somewhere in Bihar/ West Bengal weaves his magic into a Tussar silk and breathes life into it.  The tussar silk is magical! Light weight and linen like, the sari is an easy drape! I love the versatile utility of these saris. This hot pink Tussar silk paired with a geometric border and a contrast pallu was my absolute favorite. Subsequently, a serendipitous shopping find in the form of this elaborate silver necklace  became the perfect accessory that this Tussar silk demands! With this gorgeous outfit, I am ready to paint the town pink, don't you think?

BLOCK PRINT:

We featured a little spotlight piece on the art of block printing in a previous post and here is an excerpt "There is nothing more simple and sophisticated than block print fabrics. An ancient textile imprinting technique, block printing is done by artisans in rural India and these handmade fabrics are perfect inspite of their imperfections!" The delicate beauty of the symmetric block prints makes the sari a visually appealing piece of art. My persimmon and black sari was a thoughtful gift from my dear aunt who knew of my sari -mission. The block prints on this beautiful cotton sari paired with a causal embroidered fabric bag creates an eye-catching ethnic extravaganza!

BENARES:
And I am going to wrap up this edition of weaves of India with what I fondly refer to as the princess of silks (remember, the kanjeevaram  has already won the title of the Queen!) The stunning brocade from Varanasi, the Benares sari, is an exquisite production. A collector's item, if you will. So much goes into weaving the delicate gold and silk threads together to create this silken tapestry of unmatched beauty.  On a religious tour last year, my mom picked up this beautiful plum Benares with white silk threadwork for me. Maybe, someday, I could even convert this into some kind of a wall art?

Did you know? Many of India's saris have a GI right (Geographical Indication)- an intellectual property right, mapping them to the region of origin (source:wiki)

It was a great pleasure to do this feature on a topic so close to my heart -India's unparalleled textile heritage! I would be remiss if I did not thank my mom, grandmom, mother-in-law and aunts for enabling my indulgence!

Sanganeri, bomkai, tanchoi, chanderi, paithini, venkatgiri….so much more to talk about!
Cheers!

An ode to Southern Hospitality!

I am fortunate to have many favorite "home away from homes" here in the USA, far away from my own parents' and friends' home in namma Bengalooru. An escape... a place where I can just be, without having to "run the house", but just relish in the receiving end of thoughtful pampering and scrumptious good food!  Waking up in the morning  to the smell of freshly brewing coffee..and mouth watering South-Indian tiffin... sitting in my pajamas until I have to get ready to go shopping or to the spa or some such indulgent endeavor instead of rushing to work with vestiges of a hastily eaten breakfast, if any!!!!

You see, when we immigrate, we make USA our home, we develop networks of friends and extended families here, and it becomes an imperative fall back, a much needed retreat, in the chaotic, corporate, stir-crazy worlds we live in!

And a retreat it was, with my lovely friends - Ashok, Anitha, and their kindergartner Abi. Not to forget their rollicking chocolate lab Ginger! Ashok and Anitha have just welcomed their second baby into this world, and are delightfully giddy with their new arrival! So, join me Aalayam family, in congratulating this lovely couple who opened up their hospitality to me.... to Aalayam, and shared their gorgeous Southern home replete with the modern Texan charm!!!

As with most homes in Texas, the most striking feature of Ashok and Ani's home is its gorgeous high ceilinged architecture. While this style of construction can be a design intimidation for some, the home owners have embraced this feature and played it to their advantage. The Texas sun streams into their family room which has this gorgeous showcase fireplace feature, rendered even warmer with the spicy cinnamon color splash on the wall!

Ornate Tanjore paintings and brass artifacts in shadow boxes adorn the feature wall that reflects the rippling sunshine and add an elegant grace to this home.  Many of these vintage, much loved pieces are gifts from family and friends and have found a pride of place in this beautiful Texas home.

Its rare to find tufted leather seating in a warm and cozy living space, much less, an Indian living room. Leather always evokes images of sleek, sophisticated and modern and cold, yet, the homeowners get the balance of chic classy and warm classic just right! The chocolate brown sofa adds that gorgeous neutral grounding to the earth tones sprinkled all over this living room!

And of course their island kitchen is a dream one for me! Large and spacious, with a tons of above and below counter storage, it's the perfect hub for family dinner preparations, conversations and baking projects.

The kitchen veers off to a sunny, informal dining area which the homeowners use for eating, homework, and other daily, comforting activities young parents indulge in with their children! (Read messy crafts, endless drawings, puzzles..midnight milk and cookies..and endless coffee and doughnut conversations!) And how easy is it to clean up messes on the lovely, cool stone floors? Thank Heavens for some small favors.

I had to sneak peek into Ani's pantry and share this quirky and functional spice box arrangement. Isn't it so cute that all the spices are labeled in Ani's neat handwriting? This spice box medley pays perfect homage to Ani's neat and organized lifestyle.

Now, get ready to get transported into a modern seaside retreat in the middle of suburban Austin! This gorgeous master bed room has been hand painted by Ashok and Ani with painstaking precision. Can you think of how many things could go wrong while painting stripes on a textured wall? Yet the room looks lovely - modern, sophisticated and classy with metallic accents and subtle seaside themed  decor. Just the perfect retreat for the home owners!

I heard most Texas homes have their master bed room on the first floor. These Texas birds don't have to fly high to find their nest, do they! Just off the master bed, is the mocha colored staircase for the second floor. The colors around the home are perfectly complimentary to each other. Never too overwhelming, never too dull. Just perfect.

Upstairs is a visual treat. A cute little kids room which Ani is planning to remodel for the new baby and her big brother! Ani, please share with us the picture of the new room when it is ready! We are curious to see how the lil nest turns out, after all our design pow-wows!

Ashok is a movie buff. And a tech geek. He is also the coolest guy to visit because he has a larger than life, home theater media room setup upstairs, done up in fire engine red,  replete with sound masking curtains, digital dolby sound, Hollywood themed trivia, dozens of Blu Ray discs and accouterments thrown in for good measure!

Aah, to recline in those chairs with a big bag of popcorn and be lost in a true-blue Indian movie! Sheer "home away from home" nirvana!

This vintage box office style media room is a design inspiration, and a superb personal stamp the home owners have brought into this modern Texas home. I can easily imagine hiding out in this media room doing movie marathons after a stressful work week!

The guest room gets some design love too! Coffee and Gold colored accents are interspersed with teal blue...A never fail combination. My favorite part of the room is the vines that start from the window, looking like a real branch has made its way through the window into the room!

Finally, the perfect topping to Ashok and Ani's hospitality, is how they appealed to my gastronomic cravings at all times of the day! Did you know Ashok brews his own lattes and cappuccinos? He has a dreamy coffee machine which he put to delicious use during my visit there. I almost wept to leave that java junction behind!

Now, I leave you with an image of succulent Texas mangoes topped with French Vanilla Ice Cream! I added crumbles of Krispy Kreme Original Glazed doughnut into mine... Pure and Simple Dessert Heaven!!

Thank you guys for letting us into your home! Soon your beautiful home will be bustling with the patter of lil anklet clad feet...Congratulations once again!

With lots of warm tidings from the Aalayam family!

Love,
Supriya

Hello and welcome to the season of joy, color and inspiration!

Dasara and Diwali are around the corner and what better way to celebrate than share festive inspirations right here on Aalayam. Supriya and I have channeled our collective enthusiasm to create an array of seasonally appropriate festive posts! And tonight, we kick off!

Our first stop- my (Deepa's) colorful family room! If you are thinking of getting into the festive spirit with a few touches to spruce up the main living area of your house then this post might be just what you are looking for! This is also the next stop on my (Deepa's) home tour. I am sure many of you remember previously featured posts on our son's room, guest room and the media room. If not, stop by and take your time! But now - the family room.

The family room is truly the heart of our home (that's right, move over kitchen!). It is where we talk, laugh, play and grow.  It's the grand central station!  But the high-traffic did not deter us from focusing on the aesthetics. I think we (my husband and I) wanted this room to be a comfortable living and visually stunning space. This is where we entertain our guests too. And so, we pushed the envelope! Moving from the unassuming earth tones of our previous home to the bold, Bollywood-like batch of colors in this room- we did a dramatic 360! We embraced color! Bathed in a myriad hues of teal, purple, green, yellow, gold and more this room greets you with a bohemian charm and on closer look you will see traditional Indian accents layered throughout the space. For now, I am happy but any home decor enthusiast will tell you that home decor is never done and therefore, I see it as work in progress.

This room has good bones - beautiful architectural details, lots of natural light, tall windows and great views of the back yard. We walked into this room and we were sold on the house! That's how much we loved this space to begin with and therefore, making it our own was not hard.
We pictured a fun and inviting space where we could unwind and exchange stories after a hectic day at work and school and that was our inspiration. The resulting nonconformist look was a happy accident ! Not letting any  particular style stifle our creativity was a great way to go with this space, i guess. We brought in diverse elements, one at a time, purely guided by our instinct - the distressed coffee table, a BG Sharma painting, artisanal candle holders, a handcrafted wool rug and pillows in vibrant hues came together in layers to create this indulgent look. We joke about it and say that we kept adding pieces till it felt right - one little thing here and one little thing there!

Purple predominates as the accent color. How that came to be, I have no idea! I brought the purple embroidered footstools into the family room last winter to enjoy the warmth of the fire and they have remained there since and this may have very well started a cascade of purple accents slowly trickling into the room. Teal wall and purple accents, who would've thought ? But purple adds punch to this space, don't you think?
Overall, the space is anchored by investment furniture such as the leather sofa, the media credenza, a large coffee table and a seating bench and that's where the bulk of our budget was consumed. I swear by timeless pieces that are durable, versatile and which can withstand a few dings!  We bought the leather sofa about 8 years ago. Not your conventional casual seating, I agree but with the addition of a few colorful pillows, it fits right in!
The space is large and open and planning the seating area was easy. We toyed around with accent chairs before settling on this distressed bench. Together with the kantha and embroidered pillows, the bench gives this corner of the room a "haveli-esque" feel and invties conversation. The golden Buddha plaque adds a paradoxical mix of drama and serenity at the same time!
I love how decor accessories that we have owned for varying lengths of time seem to blend in harmoniously with their newer contemporaries. A recent addition- the ornate trunk merrily shares the space with a Madhubani painting (that I painted) and an intricate wood framed mirror that we have owned for 12 years. A happy marriage of the old and the new brings life to this corner.
This space works for us functionally and aesthetically because it is filled with things we love and cherish.  Indian accessories take center stage and add visual interest to our American home reflecting our multicultural personalities. Our home stands ready to celebrate and make memories this festival season!
Home means different things to different people. To me- it means an oasis! A place where I can enjoy the simple pleasures of life like the warmth of a fire on a crisp autumn evening or a quiet conversation or soulful music with my family.
Home is also a place where we bring to life traditions that make us a family and nurture our spirit. And this Dasara, I  am celebrating my first (!) Bombe Habba or Golu and my inspiration ?- Supriya's post on Dasara Bombe Habba from last year!  We prepped for our Golu this weekend and my little boy was an enthusiastic little helper! And here is a peak at what our Golu looks like.
Marapachi dolls (Pattada bombe) and channapatna wood lacquered toys are the highlight of our Golu this year. Its a modest first time effort and I had a lot of fun reading up on technicalities and teaching my boy and I look forward to letting our collection evolve over time.
Dear readers, what is your home story? What does the word "home" mean to you? And how does it play into your lives this festive season. Let's have a conversation. Write to us.
Next up, Supriya tells the story of Dashavathara followed by my post on Diwali decor inspirations - stay with us!

Cheers!

Dashavataram - The fascinating legend of the ten avatars of Vishnu!

Dear lovely Aalayam family,

Continuing on the festivities of Dasara and Diwali, its time for some story telling. On the anvil of Vijaya Dasahami,  literally meaning the victory on the dashmi, the tenth lunar day of the Hindu calendar month, lets sit down and revisit some well loved, and well worn fables!

As the legend goes, Dasara or "Dasha-hara" literally means removal of ten referring to Lord Rama's victory over the ten-headed demon king Ravana. So, who is Rama? Want me to start the story?

Ok, here goes, my favorite part of the legend associated with Dasara Bombe Habba is the Dashavataram, (Sanskrit: अवतार, derives from daśa, meaning 'ten' and avatāra, meaning 'descent'). According to the legend, God Vishnu incarnates on Earth from time to time to eradicate evil forces, to restore harmony and to liberate the worthy ones or devotees from the cycle of births and deaths.

Vishnu's avatars follow an evolutionary pattern, from fish and amphibian, through mammals and men. And it is through these avatars that Vishnu maintains his role as the great preserver of all creation.

I took a humble stab at staging these little wooden statues I have of the ten incarnations in different media- Sand, Grass, Metal..you will see it. You see, it is with poignancy that I put these dolls away until next Dasara, and I figured this is the perfect time to share the legend behind each of these avatars with each evocative picture..preserved here in Aalayam...for current and future generations to see.

The first incarnation is in the form of an enormous fish known as Mastya. In this form, Vishnu saved the four Vedas from being lost forever in the great flood (pralaya),  you see these Vedas or sacred texts were being smuggled away during this flood, by a demon called Hayagriva, and this demon was descending into the ocean. So Vishnu quickly took the form of Matsya and vanquished the demon to deliver the Vedas back to the rightful sources.

And in a very interesting parallel to the Bible, in this fast approaching flood, signalling an end to all life on earth, Vishnu had just enough time to save one special person from the ocean - he saved "Manu", the forefather of all mankind!

The second avatar of Vishnu is Kurma, the strong turtle. During a routine battle between the gods (devatas) and the demons (asuras), the gods lost all their strength due to a curse. The only way they could  redeem themselves off the curse was to churn the primitive ocean of milk using a mountain as a churning stick to get the ambrosial nectar out. And, for this they had to collaborate with the enemy camp - the asuras.

But,  the asuras drove a hard bargain, they wanted a share of the nectar of immortality. Agreeing to a settlement, the devatas and the asuras got to work. But, soon, the mountain began to sink!, Lo and Behold, Vishnu quickly took the form of the turtle Kurma and crawled under the mountain to keep it afloat with its strong shell! The nectar was out, the devatas cheated the asuras off their share, regained their strength, and peace was restored, at least in God land!

The rugged boar is the third incarnation of Vishnu. So, remember the great pralaya (flood)?, soon after that, when the creator was busy revamping the new world, a demon called Hiranyaksha stole Bhoomidevi (Mother Earth) and kept her for himself. The gods were outraged by this atrocity and summoned Lord Vishnu - of course!

Vishnu, quickly transformed himself into a giant boar & used his powerful sense of smell to search for the demon who was in hiding. Once he found the demon, he hooked the Mother Earth on to his tusks and rescued her from the demon. Varaha, or the boar, rammed the demon with his powerful tusks and that was the end of the demon! Bhoomidevi was saved, and was sanctified by the touch of Lord Vishnu in boar form!!

After the great boar Varaha destroyed Hiranyaksha, his brother, Demon King Hiranyakashipu, raged with revenge and anger. He tortured Vishnu's followers, despite having his own son, Prahalada, as a devout follower of Vishnu. You know, to add insult to injury, the king was protected by an enchantment that he could not be killed by god, man or animal, or that he would not die on earth or in space, by burning or drowning, during day time or night, indoors or outdoors! How's that for a water tight enchantment huh?

The king was irritated that Prahalada would not stop believing in Vishnu, and challenged Vishnu to appear else, he would behead his own son! But, appear he did, Vishnu, in half-man, half-lion form (Narasimha), as the fourth incarnation of Vishnu. In a smart and covert move, Narasimha was able to kill the king during twilight hours, and place his body on his lap, above the earth, yet, not in space, standing in a doorway threshold. Now, how's that for finding a loophole?

The fifth incarnation of Vishnu is a clever drawf "Vamana". Another king of demons, called Bali relocated from the underworld on to the earth and banished  Indra, the head of gods away from the earth. In order to vanquish Bali's ego, and to push him back to where he belonged, Vishnu, shrunk down to the size of a unassuming dwarf and asked Bali if he could have just as much land, as much was covered by his three steps. Looking at Vamanas short legs and feet, Bali laughed and agreed.

Vishnu, then revealed himself to the demon king, transforming from Vamana's dimunitive form into that of a giant, that kept on growing until he was looking down at the earth from outer space!! Vishnu, then took his three fateful steps. One step covered everything Bali owned in the heavens. The other covered the entire earth. Having nowhere to put his third step, Vishnu asked Bali where he should rest his final step. A man of his word, Bali offered his head, on which Vishnu rested his foot, thus vanquishing the demon king's ego for good!

The sixth incarnation of Vishnu is Parashurama, also known as Rama with an ax. His story occurs when the warriors or the Kshtriyas were dishonoring their name by corruption and disrespect to the priest caste or the Brahmins. A Brahmin boy called Parashurama wielded his ax when a kshtriya king stole a priest's magical cow, sending a clear message that the Brahmins were now capable of protecting themselves!

The story gets more populist as we go forward. Vishnu's seventh incarnation is in the form of Rama, the great hero of the epic story Ramayana. Rama was banished from his rightful kingdom by his wicked stepmother and was exiled for 14 years! His wife was abducted by the nefarious king Ravana. Rama takes the help of the monkey god Hanuman and his army to vanquish Ravana and get his wife Sita back!

The tenth day of Dasara marks the end of the war of Ramayana, where Ravana was killed. Aptly called Vijaya Dasami, meaning the tenth day of Victory! It is said that Rama's legacy as the ideal man, husband and king, is an inspiration to millions of Indians everyday! (Although I think he should have stuck to Sita, and not banished her again after people starting talking bad about her honor!, well, that is a story for another day)

The eighth incarnation of Vishnu is Krishna. Krishna vanquished the evil political king called Kamsa and played a very strategic role in the Mahabharata war, playing both sides in a almost nefarious fashion between the Pandava and the Kaurava army. Krishna is revered as a god today by millions of people around the world, thanks partly to the Hare Krishna movement, which celebrates the love between Krishna and his devout lover Radha!

The ninth incarnation of Vishnu is Buddha. Overburdened with  dogma and pointless rituals, animal sacrifices and violence of modern day, Vishnu manifested himself on earth as Buddha. Buddha's radical thinking inspired to end the cycle of rebirth and attain the state of bliss known as nirvana.

By practicing the principles of detachment, mindfulness and meditation, he preached, and practiced, that one could overcome the suffering of existence.  Buddha is often depicted on a lotus, calmly meditating, and wearing a simple garment, usually a robe!

Kalki is the tenth and final Maha Avatar of Vishnu. Also known as the avatar of the future. He is to appear at the end of the present age of Kali Yuga (Age of Darkness), when the environment is polluted and society is shrouded with hate and corruption. Kalki will arrive as a one man army to demolish the imperfect earth. He will appear as a crusader riding a white horse, brandishing a flaming sword and acting as a final judge and savior of mankind.....

Well folks, that is the legend. And the most awesome part of the whole legend is the speculated link to the theory of evolution. Think about it!

  • Matsya - fish, the first life in water (Aquatic Life)
  • Kurma - turtle, the life in land and water (Amphibian Life)
  • Varaha - animals on land (Terrestrial Life)
  • Narasimha - beings between animal and human (Hominids)
  • Vamana - short human beings (Dwarfs and Primates, the start of the Homoerectus)
  • Parasurama - humans using weapons (Early Man, knowing the use of arms)
  • Rama - humans living in community (Early Man, living in organized society)
  • Krishna - humans with animal husbandary (Evolved Man, with knowledge of politics and commerce)
  • Buddha - humans with evolved awareness and actualization (Zen is in folks!)
  • Kalki - humans with the power of destruction (Current Man, with Nuclear Power)

Is that not enough food for thought? The legend of the ten avatars of Lord Vishnu, never fails to fascinate me!

Does it intrigue you?

Love,
Supriya

p.s. Thank you to Sanjay Patel for his inspiring book "The Little Book of Hindu Deities" and little nuggets of fascinating story that brought back all of my grandmother's tales I had heard in my childhood.

Deepavali begins with a row of lights - add some color and a festive signage!

The festival of lights is around the corner and many Indian homes will soon be bathed in the tepid glow of flickering lights metaphorically representing the essence of Diwali. As I started gearing up for my favorite festival, I paused and let my mind wander and reflect. We are in the thick of the Hindu festive season and soon we shall be heading towards the Holiday season, here in the West - Thanksgiving and Christmas.  I see it as a great privilege to be able to experience both these rich cultures. I mulled over a single question " What am I celebrating?" and this triggered a cascade of thoughts and a wave of emotions, primarily of gratitude. I was overcome with a sense of appreciation for everything life has bestowed upon me.

This Diwali, as we herald the Hindu New Year, I want to shine the spotlight on the notion of "SEVA" and social responsibility that is central to Hinduism. After all, it is the little altruistic efforts that spread the light and save the world from its darkness and what better time than Diwali to talk about helping those who are less fortunate. So, dear Aalayam readers let us start a conversation about giving back to the community. From personal fulfillment to a sense of connectedness to the community - giving back implies different things for all of us. What does it mean to you? Do you like to volunteer your time, help the elderly, champion for environmental issues, plant trees or adopt pets? Please write to us about  social causes  that you are passionate about and Supriya and I will be glad to moderate this conversation, right here on Aalayam.

And now - a creative tribute to the spirit of Diwali! I love Diwali for its symbolism and gaiety. Here is an excerpt from my Diwali post last year which echoes my sentiment about the festival - " Mom always celebrated Deepavali with much oomph!  Cleaning, cooking, shopping, decorating, religious worshipping - she went the whole nine yards, always! And so, with much fondness, I brought a montage of memories of firecrackers, clay oil lamps, new clothes, visiting relatives, home made sweets and my parents’ unique Diwali traditions to my married home and over the years I have created a tailored array of rituals to suit my own family.Decorating my home for Diwali is a huge part of that tradition. A round or two of autumnal cleaning usually precedes the decorating. Rummaging through boxes of stored away Diwali décor items often yields re-usable items. A few new items are added each year but the design is always built around the core elements– lights, flowers, rangoli and thorans. I am very tradition-centric. For me the focus rests on light, divine blessings and good-will."

Start with the basics - flowers, lamps and rangoli (kolam)
And so, with a little effort I try and make this a memorable annual occasion for our family.  I am thinking brass, flowers, color and of course lots of tea lights for my inspiration board - how about you? In this post, I bring to you seasonal decor and tips from around my house to help you get into the mood of the season - join in!

Find of the season - copper toned tea lights from Hobby Lobby!
1)Alittleplanninggoesalongway - no really, it does! I tackle life with the age old to-do list. There is no greater joy than striking off things on my to-do list. My Diwali planning was no different, it began with the inescapable to-do list. Notice also my tea light  holder from Hobby Lobby. I am calling it the "find of the season". The gleaming copper finish is a perfect little way to add sparkle to your Diwali decorscape!

Use what you have - brass accents for a festive touch!
2) Incorporateheirlooms - why not personalize your festive decorations with a treasured heirloom? Start with what you have. I am sure with a little combing,  you can always find things around the house that can be incorporated My Panchaloha Vishwaroopa originally belonged to my mother-in-law. Paired with a few floating mums in an urli, it makes an eye catching festive display in our home!

3) Color is key! If you are an Aalayam follower then you know that color is our dominant decor mantra and I am saying it again this Diwali.  This variegated table mat adds depth, dimension and an ethnic touch to my accent table Diwali vignette. I chose brass as the core element this season to help me make a statement and stay within budget!

4) Build around a theme or not! Really, decorating is all about letting your creative visions come to life . So, have fun or if you are like me -short on time,  then pick one core element and build around it.     Huge time saver! My treasured brass pieces have been lovingly used in the various vignettes around the house this year. Flowers and colors make the perfect companion accessories - it's Diwali and you can tell!

5) Quirky accents add interest - Why not pair traditional brass accents with a few off the wall accents for a unique creative rendition? The peacock feather adds an element of whimsy, don't you think? I have also included a wooden tray and an etched glass votive holder in complimentary colors for added punch.

6) Pay attention to details. Our home is a collection of ethnic accoutrements - pieces lovingly collected over the years. This stone Krishna is a testament to exemplary artistry. Look at the etched details on the garlands and the braid - it is the brilliant handiwork of an artist somewhere in Mahabalipuram, India. Diwali is the perfect time to pay a tribute to such craftsmanship. This vignette was styled by my friend, Lakshmi. She was an enthusiastic accomplice and helped me put together a couple of the vignettes. Looking at this, would you be able to tell she is a Neurologist by profession? Brain circuitry and creative expression - a unique mix of interests, don't you think? Well, that's my friend Lakshmi for you!

7) Art meets life - in this exclusive Diwali rendition, Lakshmi captures the ritualistic more of wearing new clothes for Diwali. My addigai (pendant) paired with Raja Ravi Varma's Kerala girl also wearing an addigai makes an interesting art meets life portraiture. So, what are you wearing this Diwali?

8) And lastly, a depiction that echoes the shanti mantra (saying) from the Brhadaranyaka Upanishad - Tamasoma Jyotirgamaya - from darkness, lead me to light

A thali dinner awaits my dinner guests! Thali tablescape from my home.
Now, for those of you who are hosting parties and entertaining guests for a Diwali dinner - we have you covered as well!

I have talked about the art of entertaining in a previous post . It is an esoteric interest and combining the Indian concept of hospitality with the Western  art of entertaining makes hosting a Diwali dinner that much more fun! This Diwali, I chose the quintessential thali to serve my festive treats. I want my guests to leave with the memories of a bonafide festive meal  ( tall order?)

While  I work on putting together our favorite family recipes together, I will leave you with a few snap shots of my tablescape.

colorful accessories for a festive tablescape!
I custom ordered my table linens from Supriya's friend  on a recent trip to India.  Impressed with her work I commissioned her to create my custom festive table linens and I was thrilled  with the end products. Ethnic colors, patterns and textiles blended to perfection!  I have used the same mats in some of vignettes above and  I love the native flare that these mats impart.

Kalamkari and block print come to life in this one of kind table mat!
And now, an announcement!
Supriya  will feature the artist and creative genius behind the brand Varnangall  (Lavanyaa) in our next post. Her products are the amalgamation of passion, artistry and ethnic identity and you don't want to miss our next two posts. In collaboration with Varnangall, Aalayam will be giving a gorgeous Varnangall product away and here is  a sneak peek into what we are giving away!
You could win this ! Stay tuned for more information on how- Image credits :Varnangall

My Dear Aalayam family!

Hope you all had a fabulous Diwali and are continuing to bask in the afterglow of the festivities. At Aalayam, we are teeming with  colorful and inspirational posts for the remainder of the Holiday season. So hold your breath in anticipation!! we have a heartwarming Thanksgiving story coming up end of this month, and then we getaway for the holidays (tropical paradise!!), we come back to help you get ready for Christmas and the New Year!!

But for now, it is my privilege to present to you a brand that is close to my heart. A brand that symbolizes everything that I believe in about art, culture and sustainable design. A brand that gives back. A brand that inspires. A brand that makes you fall in love!

So put your hands together for:

Varnanggall – Where Colors, Design and Passion Unite!

“Varnanggall” is the beautiful South Indian vernacular for “colors". Not at all the jejune and inane kind of colors, but the glorious and stupendous kind of breathtaking and unprecedented color! And glorious and stupendous it is: Varnanggall -  the fledgling brand of Indian custom clothing, décor and accessories, the precocious brain child of design diva – Lavanyaa.

Lavanyaa combines her never-miss aesthetic of color, texture and pattern into this intricately woven brand. Never before has one seen the multitude of textures and patterns combined in a harmonious way like Lavanyaa does for Varnanggall. If Ikat and Kalamkari joust playfully with each other in a saree laden with lambani mirrorwork, Block print and Zari vie for attention in a gorgeous handcrafted cushion cover. The possibilities are limitless, the joy to the designer and the customer is endless.

This brand shows promise. Like a prodigy deserving to be nurtured. I call it "Inclusive" in the title of this post. Read on..and you will know why. The brand is invigorating, unique and refreshing. But it is for everyone. For its customers, for its artisans..and for its designer...for you and for me.

Every Varnanggall brand extension works with the other. Lavanyaa custom creates sarees, stoles, blouses,  cholees, clutches, totes, dupattas, and ghagras as part of her repertoire of clothing. She has recently launched an earthy and organic line of cushion covers, table mats and napkins as part of  her home décor collection...these sure are flying off the shelf!

The product extensibility of Varnanggall is immense, due to the versatile and vibrant vibe of the brand. While Varnanggall has its signature design of combining variegated colors and patterns in a coherent chorus of stimulating design, the brand still works for most everyday uses.

Lavanyaa works  with  classical artists, theatre and movie personalities and the corporate 9-5ers who want to add a zing of vigor into their wardrobe, their living space or their work space! She gauges their personality, talks to them, and creates a Varnanggall piece just right for them! Like a beautiful extension of their personality.

As trusted advisor and one of the strong advocates of this entrepreneurial venture, I often brainstorm with Lavanyaa on which market to get into and how to translate the vibe of Varnanggal to create customer delight!

And delighted they are, the customers of Varnanggall started off as being just close friends and family, but over the course of the last year, Varnanggall’s customer base has steadily grown. Homemakers, Teachers, Activists, Designers, Bloggers, Artists and Classical Dancers, have bought Varnanggall for themselves and their loved ones, never failing to compliment the quality, the attention to detail, the sheer harmony and the beauty of these “creations” Lavanyaa creates through Varnanggall.

These Varnanggall enthusiasts have incorporated the brand into their everyday life in a profoundly intimate fashion. This is a much needed validation to any artist who burns the midnight oil creating…designing…and pouring imagination into a product that becomes part of somebody else’s life!

Ever the avid devotee of Indian Classical Temple Architecture, Lavanyaa amplifies her design impetus from the South Indian temples and the exquisite carvings that embellish the historical landscape, superbly blending in the divine sculptural beauty of the "shilabalikaas" and "devaalaya devadaasis" as ornamental motifs in her block prints and kalamkari heiroglyphics.

Lavanyaa is supported by her staunch follower and brand manager – her sister Shylaa. Loyal, hard working and creative, Shylaa brings her grounded perspectives to Lavanyaa’s dream design, acts as her eyes and ears stationed in India, while Lavanyaa grows the business internationally.

I MUST mention Lavanyaa’s best half! And a super supportive spouse – Guru, who has unwaveringly and tenaciously supported Lavanyaa in nurturing and breathing life into a brand that continues to bring excitement and joy to all of our lives!

Stay tuned for a never before seen tour of Lavanyaa and Guru’s cozy home in London, UK...coming up in the next post of this two part series on Aalayam! This creative hearth is the couple’s headquarters where most of the magic behind Varnanggal happens!

Now, in case you still need reason why this brand is so close to my heart. It is because of the sustainable design model that Lavanyaa has embraced.  She works with the unsung heros of kalamkari, lambani and block print..the actual weavers and artisans, traveling to their home base, eliminating middle men, bringing never seen before quality, design and exquisite crafstmanship to our homes!

Lavanyaa gives back a significant portion of her revenue to these artists, insisting that they get the credit, monetary recognition and accolade they deserve for their hard work. She has been able to employ many talented, but little known rural artisans of South India, who breathe earthy oomph and sentience into Varnanggall.

Not only is Lavanyaa keeping the rich , precious heritage of Indian textiles alive through her brand, she is doing so with  aplomb, and through giving back to people who deserve it!

In all the rush of everyday life, we do not pause to see if we have made someone smile, if someone will remember us for making their day brighter. I deem Lavanyaa is doing that...making someone smile..making someone's day brighter.. not just to us with her brand, but also to these rural artists whose labor of love we adorn, embrace and enjoy. The brand value and goodwill Varnanggall is earning as a result of these smiles is ....PRICELESS!

By now, I am sure you want to meet the artist behind the brand...see who she really is..know what drives her and what keeps her up at night! Well, you will not be disappointed! In our next feature, we come BACK! With Lavanyaa's exclusive interview and her HOME TOUR!!!! You will not want to miss this cozy and creative space. Trust me. So do come back!

Dear Aalayam Family!

Lavanyaa extends her warm regards and deep gratitude – your enthusiastic participation through this collaborative platform has taken both Varnanggall and Aalayam to the next level of audience engagement !

Today, as promised we bring to you the exclusive interview with Lavanyaa,  the exponent of creative expression,  the force behind Varnanggall. Lavanyaa speaks lovingly about her passions, her dreams (plus her favorite foods and outfits!) and of course,  about her inspiration behind creating and sustaining the brand that is steadily making its way into people’s hearts, minds and homes!

The entire interview is peppered with candid and colorful shots from Lavanyaa and Guru’s snug and intimate home in the UK. If your home speaks to who you really are, I sincerely believe, that Lavanyaa’s home speaks volumes! It is an apt reflection of her fun, quirky and eclectic persona. It blends the warm and mellow, superbly with the exotic and bohemian! Just like Varnanggall…

So sit back and get ready to meet and perceive Lavanyaa!

Supriya (S): Lavanyaa, congratulations. Varnanggall is 1 year old!! We all love the vibrant and verdant punctuation Varnanggall makes in our lives. And we want to pick your brain to know more about it! First of all, why the name Varnanggall?? How does it speak to the essence of the brand?

Lavanyaa(L): Thank You Supriya J! Varnanggall is blessed to have people like you who add so much sparkle to its sheer existence. Varnanggall is a tamil word for “Colours”. It’s about an artist’s dream and vision to paint the world with her colours, feel the cheerfulness and find contentment through it!
S: Where do you derive your daily inspiration for designing individual pieces? Is it your travels? The creative recesses of your mind? Or does it just come from the heart?

L: Classical art has always been an integral part of my life ever since childhood, whenever I think of colours I think of Bharathnatyam and the South Indian Temples. I get inspired by the mandapams, the pillars, the gopurams and the amount of intricately carved stones on them which depict deities, dancers, flowers and geometrical shapes. Thanks to my extensive travels to some of the most distinctive and promising temples of South India, that are rich in the legacy of carvings and culture...Hampi, Tanjore, Belur Halebidu, Chidambaram, Badami Aihole.... They surely have fetched me great inputs to work on my creations. I also research through a legion of books and my recent discovery was about Indian ancient civilizations and the South Indian Royal Kingdoms. End of the day I do use my creative mind and heart to compile all these and mould them into a Varnanggall creation.

S: How do you speak to your demographic (buyers and aspiring buyers) ? How do you translate their needs into a Varnanggall style statement?

L: The ever emerging technology is definitely a boon for online fashion retailers like me – it helps me leverage the social media as a marketing channel and collaborate with my customers via emails, phone calls, skype etc!. It’s all about understanding the client’s needs, being transparent, honest and being informal, and once you are on it  it’s really an easy affair. It’s a great feeling to enhance every woman’s latent beauty and demureness and that’s why I always aim at creating something that blends into their personality and fashion sensibilities. I also insist on maintaining the forte of Varnanggall, so that the creation does carry the essence of the brand and is in complete sync with it.

In the due process I find myself lucky enough to have built a network of gorgeous people who have become an integral part of my Varnanggall journey.

S: Where do you source your material from? Can you talk to us a little bit about your creative assembly process (design through to delivery)?

L: I’m still learning through the textile business and each day I end up exploring new things that aid my creative process and create avenues for further business development. Though I initially ventured into the local markets of Bangalore city it lacked the authenticity! And that’s when I started travelling to discover new places to work closely with the Cooperative Societies, Weavers, Artists to fetch the authentic and for real gorgeous fabrics. Once I have my fabrics stacked up, the next step is the design/sketch or sometimes I just go by my gut feeling by having all the fabrics right in front of my eyes. So by now there is a structure to the creation I’m looking at, the next step is to work alongside with my seamstress on the specifications and patterns. Once the creation has gotten into the desired shape, the next big phase is the Quality Assurance, where errors if any are rectified, and then shipped to destination of the customer.

S: What are you most excited about Varnannggal plans for 2014 and beyond?

L: We are reaching the fag end of the year and it’s time to celebrate the holiday season, it’s been a very challenging and thriving year for Varnanggall.  Couple of interesting avenues and plans in the pipeline:
vVarnanggall is going to build an exclusive website to allow more demographic buyers access Varnanggall from any country in the world irrespective of their existence on social media.
vVarnanggall is going to introduce a line of Western wear.
vVarnanggall is going to conduct Transformational Art and Design workshops to the artists that it’s currently working with – a workshop to educate and explore the opportunities to blend the traditional art with modern art.
vIn order to build the labour, Varnanggall is working towards setting up an all women community in the rural areas of South India.
vVarnanggall is working with some of the big brands on their massive orders.
vVarnanggall is going to participate in some of the notable art exhibition(s) soon

S: What have been the highlights and lowlights of the last one year!?

L: There haven’t been any lowlights as such, but there were challenges that were taken more positively to move forward in my journey. I clearly witnessed sense of endless possibilities and how people embraced Varnanggall which in turn brought into the existence of life time customers and like-minded souls!

Working with the unsung heroes of Kalamkari, Lambani, Ilkal and the weavers of Andhra Pradesh surely takes the limelight this year. There is sense of solitude without these precious people; now they have become a part of my family and so have they accepted me into theirs! J

S: Has Varnannggal changed your everyday style - at home and at play?

L: It definitely has and the biggest thing I get in the bargain is the time for myself – it’s given me a meaningful composure and depth to what I do every day and to weed out all the negative energy that can easily surround you in this industry.

S: We know that you are an engineer by trade, and worked in the field of IT Consulting. How have you reconciled the two - profession and passion? Given that they are so far removed from each other?
L: From the period of being a kid I was very passionate about Indian art - bright colours, patterns and shapes, but in the due course like most of the others I did get subjected to various academic pressures and life styles where I had to gradually park aside the real passion and interests in me. Before I let it slip between the cracks it was time for me to act on! Well it took me 25 long years to recapitulate the real craving and the capping satisfaction in my life, and that’s when I found my true calling – “Varnanggall” to put my overriding obsession and energy into viable products and spread this visual art to a bigger community.

I think the toughest decision for me was to quit my IBM job. Beyond a point it was just impossible for me balance my primary job and Varnanggall. Due to the time constraints, I and my seamstress had to spend sleepless nights over the weekends. I did give it a year to study my market alongside the IBM job and eventually quit IBM.  You know, think about getting a handful of money in an air conditioned environment to a situation where you don’t know if you are going to make any money at all and furthermore keep hunting for fabrics in areas which you have never been to even in your wildest dreams! The savings that I accumulated in the last year of my IBM job were the angelic investors, as it was a start-up I invested just enough money (neither underfunded nor overfunded) to turn realistic ideas into products and run a scalable business model.

I still hold my engineering degree/certificate/experiences and could go back to the IT profession anytime, but my passion for art has definitely superseded it. I feel end of the day it’s all about taking that leap of faith to reach your goal. Thanks to my experiences/exposures at IBM for teaching me how to be on my own feet and inducing the professional character.

S: Between your travels, exhibitions and managing a vibrant brand, how do you maintain a work-life balance ? Most of us here at Aalayam are juggling our passions with hamster wheel of everyday life, so we’d love to hear from you!
L: Thanks to a gorgeous support system called as “ Family”! My husband, in laws , parents and sister who have always been supportive in every venture and step of Varnanggall. They are my primary motivation to function every day and nurture me through their profound love. Having said that, I do make an effort to spend qualitative time whenever I get to in spite of unevenness in my schedules OR even better I have them accompany me in my travels so that they get to explore and witness what I do J
You know it’s all about finding exciting and creative ways to spend that extra bit with your family!
S: What does being a self made entrepreneur mean to you ? What challenges should the novice creative entrepreneur anticipate?

L: A self made entrepreneur is someone who turns his/her passion into a business, someone who invests in himself/herself and creates a competitive advantage, dreams big, has vision, stays focused on the goals/objectives, someone who can dirty his/her hands and someone who can see things beyond their nose and stay grounded.

You need to have good amount of determination, persistence and a winning attitude until your venture finds its feet. You definitely have to be strong , follow your heart and be surrounded by loads and loads of positive energy, some people will love to pull you down and show disrespect to what you do because you are extremely talented, but hey!, do not worry, there are good people too who will admire your work and support every move of you J
..and lastly your business has to create distinctive products that bring in the shine and metamorphosis in people, otherwise it’s pointless!
S: Among the current crop of Indian celebrities, whose fashion sense do you admire the most?
L: I strongly idolise these real women with timeless styles - Shabana Azmi, Arundhathi Nag, Nanditha Das, Shobha De, Shobhana and Konakana Sen
S: ....and finally, let’s have some fun! We would like our readers to know who Lavanyaa really is, so here goes!
a) You would love a ticket to - Prague, Czech Republic

b)Your favorite holiday destination is– Sorrento, Italy

c)Your idea of date night is - I love to be pampered JJ, so obviously flowers, champagne, gifts, cook together our favourite meal and unwind in our couch with a bunch of throws and pillows around J

d)Your favorite comfort food is– Chinese in all my good and bad times J

e) If given a chance to change one thing about the world you would– I would have one race, one colour, one religion, one language and one ethnicity!

The Legion of Indian Superheros!

Hello dear Aalayam family!

The Aalayam authors want to extend a warm welcome to all our new members! Welcome to the fold! Remember to spread the word, if you will, about the Grand Aalayam Giveaway! The contest is still open!!

Today's topic is about Indian superheros - Hindu mythology's contribution to legendary characters with superhuman abilities and/or magical powers, wearing distinctively cool costumes, having magnificent personalities, and placed on the earth to primarily fight against evil forces.

I am going to keep the tone of this post deliberately cheeky, non religious and non pedantic. These are my views alone and DO NOT represent the teachings or representations of Hindu religion. So, with that out of the way, here goes! I have used the images from Sanjay Patel's whimsical book on Hindu Deities in this post, purely because I think the pictures are so cute and represent these "larger than life" heroes with  so much sauce!

Growing up, my grandmother used to fascinate me with stories about these superheroes - Ganesha, Shiva, Vishnu, Rama, Krishna and all the cool avatars these dudes used to manifest themselves into. The ladies got a mention too occasionally - Durga, Lakshmi, Saraswathi and Sita - well, what can I say, gender discrimination was not so outrageous back then!

Just like fairy tales from the Brothers Grimm, my grandmother's tales used to mesmerize me with the contrast between the good guys (the legion I continue to talk about through this post!) and the bad guys! (they don't get a mention, although if I must, Duryodhana is my favorite - talk about loyalty!)

(note the reproductive symbolism via the Lingam, that depicts power!)

Animals are an integral part of the support system to these superheroes. Whether as means of transportation, avatars to address world emergencies or trusted confidantes. This glorification of animals (and ergo - vegetarianism, for the most part) stems from the belief that God (Universal good for the atheists) resides in all living creatures. Krishna and the docile cow, Vishnu and Shiva's king cobra, Kartikeya's glorious peacock, Rama and the loyal monkey or Durga's valiant tiger, all creatures great or small, have their place in this legion  of superheroes! (all these superheros get a one page dedication in Patel's book, please do read!)

Female empowerment is synonymous in our mythology with benevolence, harmony, fertility (yes, yes..hold on to your skirts!) power and balance!

Whether it is Mahadevi, who appears as bloodthirsty, evil relinquishing warriors like Durga or Kali...or as Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, prosperity and happiness.. or as Saraswathi, the epitome of knowledge and the arts, all these accomplished ladies reign supreme in establishing a strong foundation of good and proper, and if necessary, powerful and unrelenting, to people who depend on them! A boilerplate for the modern day woman right?

Now, on to the wives and mommies. What is a great superhero, without a supportive partner he can rely on to keep the home-fires burning huh? Parvati, aka Uma, Gauri and Shakti is symbolic of unflappable commitment to her husband, Shiva, and her unwavering devotion to her children Ganesha (the elephant headed dude) and Kartikeya (of the peacock fame).

And of course, who can forget Sita, the quintessential honorable wife, who was banished because her chastity was questioned, although empires were destroyed to protect it! In Patel's words, Sita's martyrdom to her duty, as a steadfast and faithful wife has left a profound legacy.

Now for the modern day parenting conundrum! I am sure all of you face this with your kids as well. How do I expose my kids to the spiritual and austere aspects on these superheros, Gods, deities  however you want to think of them, in a western society, without stepping too deep into the religious manifestations and interpretations? How do I make the core message - "triumph of good over evil", and make that relevant to the everyday challenges my kids face at work, at play and at life's sandbox!?

We sure have some awesome examples. Our legion of superheros and heroines, have set the stage of model behavior (some behaviors are suspect as well, trust me, diabolical politicking, disloyal abandonment,  manipulation for world good etc..) hey, but that's where individual and parental judgement come in! Isn't that right?

I leave you with a cool image of Nataraja, the dancing king, who vanquished evil with  some seriously cool dance moves! Nataraja's cosmic dance symbolizes the balance between creation, preservation and destruction, in a way, urging us, everyday heroes to hold our responsibilities, actions and reactions in stylish equilibrium!

Love,
Supriya

Today's feature - A backyard soiree in pink!

The trellis is used as a focal point!
Well, this was actually a bridal shower that I hosted in honor of a dear friend recently. However, since I did not know much about bridal showers or hosting one before this, I planned a garden soiree in PINK - figured I couldn't go wrong with that! Pink is a great color to celebrate love and the romantic union of two hearts  and it set the direction for this intimate soiree that involved an adorable bride and a few of her friends. So, read on..

A hand drawn bride and groom for a personalized touch!
The tradition of celebrating bride-to-be with a dedicated event traces back to 16-17th century Netherlands (source). Bridal showers have been a pre-wedding cultural courtesy in the United States since the 1890s. Modern day showers range from simple soirees to  flamboyant fares (the Martha Stewart kind!).

Building on the PINK theme!
Our shower purported to allow the bride to pause and imbibe all the pre-wedding excitement.  The chaos and frenzy that is so integral to INDIAN wedding preparations often casts a dizzy spell and warrants a relaxing break. We picked a weekend in May and got a group of  friends together. Laughter, fun and raising a toast to love was our main goal.  We threw in some pink and some pom poms, that's all!

An intimate setting with a big impact!
Here's what I learnt (from various www sources) about bridal shower etiquette in the lead-up:

- The maid of honor or one of the bridesmaids hosts the event typically in their home.
- Etiquette calls that the bride's family - mom, mom-in-law not host the event!
- It is essentially a get-together to shower bride-to-be with gifts, love and attention.
- The bride, in turn, thanks the hostess with a gift.
-  It is usually planned as an afternoon event, 4-6 weeks prior to the wedding and usually after the invitations are sent out.
Wishes...
I like to plan my events ahead of time but this one just crept up on me.  I intended to host the shower since the time her wedding date was finalized (many moons ago). With conflicting on-call schedules, getting the group together turned out to be harder than I imagined and eventually, I gave up on the planning. Miraculously, we found one weekend when most of us were available and it happened to be THAT weekend!  No worries, breathe easy- I told myself! It can be done!

Enjoying the outdoors ...yet again!
With one enthusiastic bride in tow (I know, I know - bad etiquette!), I made a few quick stops - flowers, cake, decorations - all in a few hours span!  We argued, disagreed and negotiated about the look and feel of the soiree. But we agreed on PINK! The girls graciously pitched in with the food and the punch and wore pretty dresses and perfect smiles! We lounged in my backyard enjoying the gorgeous spring weather! All in all - it was a merry affair, one that I am positive our bride-to-be will cherish forever. The shower was a great way to incorporate a tradition from her adopted country into her wedding saga before she heads home for  traditional Indian nuptials.

The shower ensemble matched the bride's chirpy personality and included brilliant hued pompoms, paper lanterns in a dainty pink, gorgeous asiatic lilies, an adorable pink plant holder, pink striped paper straws (yes!), wishing tree made of willow branches , the PERFECT cake  and many more chic details which even Aphrodite would have appreciated!

Savoir-faire details!

The girls take home a tiny token of love...almond candy!

Putting it together was an absolute blast and yet another experience that I will fondly remember.   I wish my friend Vaishali and her groom Ashwin,  a lifetime of happiness….

Aalayam shines the spotlight on the American Bridal Shower  - a cultural more that celebrates a bride as she stands on the threshold of a new life!

Sigh! The wishing tree in willow branches.
 How to create this look:
1) Choose 2 primary colors for your setting, if you must, add an accent color - in this case, I opted for pink and basic white . Notice, I chose different shades and hues of pink, to add a 3 dimensional effect.
2) I kept my willow branches for the wishing tree particularly long (see 1st pic)to add visual interest and to keep the eye moving from the table decorations to the trellis decorations
3) Mix in some personalized elements (hand written signs are great!) with the store bought decorations to create your very own custom arrangements
4) Stay away from tacky banners, paper centerpieces, faux floral arrangements!
5) If you have to stick to a theme - remember, less is more! In this case, the bride sign on the trellis, the hand drawn bride and groom and the card stock paper with wedding words were our only wedding themed accessories.
6) Don't be afraid to use stuff you already own - if it is the right color, it will work! Case in point-my pink elephant and the candle holders!
7) And lastly, fresh flowers, fresh flowers, fresh flowers!

Please join us next week to find out who won the gorgeous India Circus tray and we will be talking COLOR!

Cheers!

Spice Rack Remedies! A Case for Coriander

Dear Aalayam family!

Onward we go..humbled by your love, support and reassurance - We are on the anvil of our 50th post!! Deepa and I take a moment to say THANK YOU!!  We love the creative process that goes on in our minds and through our inkwells to bring gorgeous and much loved features for Aalayam, and YOU are a huge part of it! So THANK YOU!

What is any momentous event without some food eh? So, in continuation of the popular series of house hold spices and their curative properties, we introduce the Quintessential Coriander in....

SpiceRackRemedies!
What our kitchen counter might hold, to cure what ails us.
Coriander seeds reign supreme in Indian households, used as the primary spice to flavor curries and stews. Photo courtesy - Sripriya Murthy Photography - Facebook.

Coriander (known as cilantro in its herb form) is a powerful bacteria fighter. The oil from coriander seeds destroys dangerous cells by damaging their membranes and interfering with cellular respiration. This process is effective in wiping out strains of E.coli and salmonella. Coriander, like many spices, contains antioxidants, which can delay or prevent the spoilage of food seasoned with this spice. Coriander has also been used as a folk medicine for the relief of anxiety and insomnia.

My personal recipe book full of handwritten treasures from around my family!

Coriander seeds are used in traditional Indian medicine as a diuretic by boiling equal amounts of coriander seeds and cumin seeds, then cooling and consuming the resulting liquid. In holistic and traditional medicine, it is used as a carminative and as a digestive aid (Now, as a mommy who has given her daughters Woodwards Gripe Water for many a tummy ache situation, I can vouch for that!). Does that ring a bell? Most of Amma's family recipes had coriander, no wonder our tummies are so healthy and strong! Don't you think?

Coriander seeds were found, in a study on rats, to have a significant lowering of levels of total cholesterol and triglycerides, and increasing levels of high-density lipoprotein. This effect appeared to be caused by increasing synthesis of bile by the liver and increasing the breakdown of cholesterol into other compounds.

It is no wonder that, most of us who have been consuming coriander in Rasams, Sambars, Puliyogare, Curry and other delectable Indian dishes find the curative properties of coriander familiar and oddly reassuring! And when combined with the "hot"  pain killing, blood pressure reducing and blood circulation boosting properties of the Indian Red Chili, they very well might lead the way as the spicy dynamic duo of disease fighting!

Red Chillies with curative capsacin are a staple spice combination with  coriander . Photo courtesy - Sripriya Murthy Photography - Facebook.
Now, lets prepare something comforting and familiar with these spices shall we? And make coriander the star of the show? How many of you know of and have enjoyed the tangy confluence of sweet and spice, lending itself to decorate many a South-Indian platter - Puliyogare?

Puliyogare ( puḷi "sour" + ogara "rice" is a South Indian rice preparation served during festive occasions  served in temples in abundant quantities in organic cups and plates made of dried leaf! Puliyogare is also known as puḷihora ("sour rice" in Telugu) or pulinja in Tamil, and tamarind rice in English.

Puliyogare is traditionally made using cooked rice mixed with tamarind juice, peanutscoriandercoconutred chilicurry leavesjaggerypeppermustard seedsfenugreekturmericasafoetidaurad dal, and cumin. It is a staple during festivals such as Ganesha Chaturthi and Diwali or any other ceremonious occasion.

Wonderful recipes for Puliyogare and Puliyogare Gojju (the zesty sauce to be mixed with rice for instant gratification!) can be found dime a dozen on the internet! So, I encourage you to try your own version today!!

Black Pepper seeds add that serious smoky bite to most South Indian dishes. Photo courtesy - Sripriya Murthy Photography - Facebook.
Puliyogare is particularly known to be a specialty of the Iyengars community, and some of the best Puliyogare is made using my Amma's recipe for it!

As I sit leafing through the recipe book, remembering fondly the lunch boxes with Karnataka style and Andhra style Puliyogare...."peppering" in my school and college days with fond memories..my friends vying for "Dabba swap" whenever I had Puliyogare for lunch.....I sigh..as I strive to ensure that the joys of  these traditional menu items may not be lost with my generation..Hope my kids find my recipe book valuable one day..that captures the hand-written love passed on from one generation to another...

The Classic Puliyogare - a mouthwatering must in a South Indian meal!
I remember the day when my best buddy and I had copious amounts of Puliyogare with glasses of wine to accompany our Sex and the City marathon on TV! Wow - what a combination and what fun!!

Do you have any fond food stories like this that make you smile? Memories so intertwined with your taste buds that whenever you eat a certain dish, positive associations come flooding back? Hope this spicy story was a good read for you! It definitely was a comforting walk down the memory lane for me!

This Thanksgiving, I have many things to feel grateful for. And I will make a list here for posterity. With the attitude of gratitude, I share with you my dear Aalayam family, the list of things I am Giving Thanks for. And a thought to pay the good fortune that I have been bestowed with....forward.

Here's My Thanksgiving List:

1. I am thankful for Aalayam, the blog, the collaboration with Deepa and the other fantastic artists we work with, and of course, the interaction with you all. I am thankful for the opportunity to express myself via a social media platform, instantly and easily. Thankful for "push-button" publishing.

2. I am thankful for my family - my kids, my husband and my parents, who listen to me love and laugh, scold and fuss, worry and nag, unfettered! Yet, they love me. I am truly thankful for that.

3. I am thankful for my friends - who do not judge. Who accept me for who I am. And for what I am not.

4. I am thankful for tranquil landscapes, the peace and harmony of living a driving distance away from natural green spaces. I am thankful for Sunday Morning newspaper and coffee, sitting and watching the lake gurgle, while day dreaming. I am thankful for the means afforded to me to indulge in good food, drink, (chocolate included!) and gyms. ;)

5. I am thankful for my career, my co-workers and my clients, Yes even my boss! :) I am thankful to them for allowing me to lead, manage and ideate - all things I love to do, and still get paid for it!

6.  I am thankful for my unflagging enthusiasm - to entertain, decorate, create, write, and always do something. I am thankful that I always have something to look forward to.

7. I am thankful for my home and my garden (that my husband carefully tends). I am thankful for my sweet husband who lets me decorate my nest MY WAY!

8. I am thankful for nature's bounty and color - in fruits, vegetables and greens. I am thankful for the seasonal varieties of farm fresh produce I have access to, for creating scrumptious meals for my family and friends.

9. I am thankful for my indulgences - my favorite authors, my favorite foods and favorite hang-outs (yes, shopping places included!) which bring me solace, help me recharge and rejuvenate.

10. Finally, I am thankful for all my faculties - physical and mental, that allow me to function to my maximum potential....

With this humbling thought, I make my plebeian attempt to pay it forward, to the not so fortunate, in whatever way I can. Sometimes through the means afforded by currency..sometimes through mentoring...sometimes through time contribution..but all the time through compassion and heart-felt, profound sense of gratitude.....How do you pay it forward?

Here's wishing Aalayam readers a fabulous holiday season.

Love,
Supriya

Christmas on the Keys

The holiday season has arrived in full force, yet again!  Holiday parties and Christmas soirees are the norm in most suburban communities across the United States. But maybe, some of you want to get away from the holiday hubbub and enjoy a vacation in a place with  blue skies, fluffy clouds and azure waters?
Pier  at the Cheeca.
How about a contrarian celebration in a far flung paradise ??
Join me on this travel feature to the Florida Keys as we cross the scenic Overseas Highway to celebrate Christmas on the KEYS. Why not trade-in your traditional white Christmas for a tropical Holiday this year? Even Santa loves to get away from the cacophony!

The great American road trip has been our family's all season favorite pastime for the last 15 years! There is no better way to experience this beautiful country's heterogenous landscape! And so, each year we pack our bags and our camera (of course!) and get into our car and hit the road. Yes, in the winter too! Over the years, books and atlas' have been replaced by GPS and smart phone apps but little else has changed about our cherished quest!

And today, I am featuring a few pictures from our 2010 Christmas road trip to an ultimate festive jaunt - the Keys!
Route 1 or the Overseas Highway features on many must-do road trip lists as a hot favorite! So, if you haven't explored this route yet - I urge you to get on the road now!

Here is what the experts have to say about this iconic drive and I couldn't have said it better myself!

"The 113-mile (181-kilometer) drive on Highway 1 from mainland Florida to Key West induces sensory overload. Besides the natural beauty along the route—tidal flats, teal waters dotted by distant islands—the so-called Overseas Highway awes you in its own right as an engineering marvel. Its concrete stretches across impossible expanses of water, the Atlantic spreading out to the left, the Gulf to the right."  - NationalGeographic,DrivesofaLifetime

If you are looking for a holiday gift - here is a great book!
"Island hopping to Land's end, this one-of-a-kind highway offers the promise of radiant seascapes, exotic underwater worlds, and animals found nowhere else in America" -  Reader's Digest,TheMostScenicDrivesinAmerica

For me, the trip began with a stay at the Cheeca Lodge, an Islamorada Key resort.

Holiday trees cheerily welcome guests at the Cheeca!
To enjoy holiday hospitality in a plantation- style retreat in the backdrop of tropical weather  far away from  freezing winter temperatures was an exotic experience in itself - one that will stay etched in my memory forever.  The design and decor enthusiast in me is always looking for travel accommodations that are a bit indulgent. However, I try to be budget savvy and avoid the high price of highbrow travel and look for off season deals!
The many shades of comfort!

Overall, the Cheeca did not disappoint but their "secluded private beach" was not much of a beach at all! Even so, the property had lots of other family friendly amenities of boutique distinction that made for a great stay!

Now, the trip down the Overseas Highway all the way down to the Key West, flanked on either side by shimmering waters and stunning seascapes was an unforgettable Holiday treat. We could not have possibly soaked it all in from the inside of our automobile and so we made several stops at quaint little highway eateries and beaches and state parks.

Red tortillas  - after all, it's the Holidays!
Bahia Honda was beautiful! The pristine beach and the architecturally interesting bridge was well worth the pit stop.
the old bahia honda bridge - mesmerizes in all its metallic glory!

Now, Key West is a happening holiday hot spot! The tourists fill  Key West with its Joie De Vivre!
A customary picture stop at the Southernmost point of continental USA, a stroll down the island's streets to marvel at the architecture of the kaleidoscopic Victorian homes and a tour of  Duval street  to feel the energy of enthusiastic tourists completed our afternoon. We saved the best for last - Mallory Square! We had heard about the legendary sunset celebration and made our way to Mallory Square, just in time! And what a carnival it was too! All in honor of the gorgeous nightly sunset!

Street performers, holiday tinsel,  lights, live music and a few cocktails provided the perfect accompaniment to enjoy a splendid sunset and my patient husband captured it to perfection making it one of the memorable sunsets of our life!

The convivial spirit of Key West makes it an ideal holiday destination!

Whether you are there for some sport fishing action or just to experience Island culture - the KEYS do not disappoint. And in this case, a road trip on the magnificent Overseas highway is your destination! We bought home many memories of seashores peppered with palm trees, turquoise blue waters, lighted holiday inns and the Island's die-hard festive spirit!

I will recall these images fondly as I celebrate Christmas in frigid temperatures this year!
Hope you enjoyed our holiday travel feature but if you'd rather stay home and watch the twinkle of the lights on your christmas tree by a warm fire and sip hot cocoa while you wait for Santa and Rudolf, then stay tuned! I am featuring my (Deepa's) holiday home soon and you are all invited!

Cheers!

Spotlight on the Tanjore Style of Painting

 50

We are fifty posts old! The number brings with it a milestone and a lot of pride!  Our journey has only just begun and yet it seems right to pause for a moment and address this number. Hello FIFTY!

To see Aalayam evolve into something beyond a mere idea that Supriya and I shared brings much happiness. Personally, it is also a guilty pleasure! On many weekend nights, I silently peel myself away from my family and retreat into the quiet recesses of my study to work on a blog post. What joy it is too! I feel blessed to have a platform to express my artistic side!  Aalayam speaks to our love of writing as well and often our posts are wordy but if you linger long enough you will see that we write from our heart and consistently bring a lot of passionate energy into our posts. Supriya and I have a robust pipeline with all kinds of beautiful inspirations waiting to be shared and we hope you will stay with us as the next phase of Aalayam unravels.

Fellow bloggers - thank you for letting us bounce ideas with you and for inspiring us, friends and family - thank you for cheering us from the sidelines and dear readers - thank you for propelling us on!

And because the golden 50 deserves a golden post - I will shine the spotlight on Tanjore paintings - an Indian art form with glittering gold! How about that?

An ethnic vignette brings in some traditional splendor to our home

A shopping stop  many years ago took me and my husband to a busy street full of art retailers in Chennai, India. We were novice art collectors back then but somehow we had set our heart on acquiring a Tanjore painting - that was our mission that sweltering afternoon. Baggage and weight restrictions implied we could only buy one maybe two art pieces and therefore the challenge was to pick  "the" perfect Tanjore painting among 1000s (yes, that street had several stores carrying atleast 100 paintings each!)

The central subject of the Tanjore painting is a Hindu God/Goddess. Since our acquisition did not have any religious motives, we went back and forth deciding on which deity would suit our decorative needs best. The discussion included the facial expression of the deity- a smile ranked higher than a somber expression (this was the extent of our art appreciation!) Also, in consideration were the finishes - classic or antique or embossed? Then came the colors - luckily, most paintings had the same vibrant color palette with subtle variations. Next, we talked about the frames -  the wood, the carvings, the color and so on. My husband wanted to know more about the artists and engaged in detailed discussions on what went into the creation of the paintings. Each piece was uniquely defined by the skill and artistry of the creator. Then we talked about the guilding technique. Six hours later
(I kid you not!) we found ourselves deeply immersed in the fascinating world of Tanjore paintings.  The shimmer and shine of the semi precious adornments mesmerized us as we browsed through several aisles worth of neatly stacked Tanjore paintings. Walking from one store to the next and then back to the first one, we channeled our combined enthusiasm towards finding "OUR"  Tanjore painting. That day is vividly etched in my memory! Eventually, we narrowed our choices down to two paintings. We wanted to bring them both home. But with a heavy heart and a big sigh I left Venkateshwara behind and brought home our Mahalakshmi.
Vibrant hues, shimmering embellishments, artistic details - THE TANJORE PAINTING!
She has been with us since! Life has demanded several moves of us  both for professional and personal reasons. Each move brings with it an annoying feeling of newness. However, the unfamiliarity of being in an unknown place dissipates the minute I hang my Tanjore paintings up. It feels like home again in an instant and such is the comfort that art work breeds. It is yours and it defines your space!
Another corner gets accesorized with art work -the ethnic kind!

Several sources trace this art form back to the 16th century (I know!!, that was a long time ago) and the art flourished under the patronage of the Nayakas of Madurai. If you hear the term Tanjavur Oviyam or Palagai Padam (plank painting)  just nod your head knowingly now - they are referring to Tanjore paintings, that's all!  For more on Tanjore paintings, over to Wiki.

Since that trip to Chennai, we have added another Tanjore painting to our collection. This one a gift from our dear friends D and K  and depicts Krishna playfully serenading Radha on the Jhoola.  This painting reminds us of our friendship and the good times spent together.

Krishna serenades Radha  playfully in this rendition and it comes to life in gold foil!
Let me end with this quote. "Decorating Golden Rule: Live with what you love" ~ Unknown
…….and we live with our  beloved Tanjore paintings - they are tied to fond memories and our ethnic heritage and make our home OUR HOME.

Do you like our spotlight series? Then I urge you to spend a minute browsing through our archives- we have already featured Warli and Terracotta and more!

Next up - a travel feature. Any guesses on where we are going?

Cheers!

Voyage to Vancouver

Art gallery, Vancouver, BC
Supriya is on vacation this week and I thought we should all go on a vacation too! A virtual vacation albeit.  We are going to Vancouver!  I am afraid this will be a picture heavy and lengthy travelogue and therefore I will exclude the rest of British Columbia. However, I recommend that if you are planning a trip to Vancouver now or in the future, you include Whistler and Victoria in your itinerary. British Columbia is simply gorgeous - the sights will leave you spellbound!

On a family vacation back in 2010, we took over 1700 photographs (!) and to filter and distill, just a few, for this post was really hard as you can imagine. Here are a few postcards that capture the allure of Vancouver!

The city tourism website has a curated collection of quotes from different online and print resources which I will use throughout the post.  The experts have succinctly captured the essence of the city in a few words!

All images used in this photo essay are taken by my husband. kindly write to me at aalyaminspiration@gmail.com before using.

Vnacouver Harbor shimmers under the night lights.

"You’re gorgeous, baby, you’re sophisticated, you live well...Vancouver is Manhattan with mountains. It’s a liquid city, a tomorrow city, equal parts India, China, England, France and the Pacific Northwest. It’s the cool North American sibling."– The New York Times

Vancouver by night!

Whistler!

"Vancouver is a city unlike any other. Wherever I look, I see water or mountains -- or both. And everyone looks so healthy."– The Daily Telegraph (UK)

Tourists queue up to see more of Vanouver's wonders!

"In winter, the heart of downtown [Vancouver] is 30 minutes from the ski slopes. In summer, sun seekers crowd its beaches and seaside promenades. And despite a rain-prone climate, it displays a perpetually sunny disposition. Consider it the supermodel of North American cities."– USA Today

Tourist buses and street artists - a common Vancouver phenomenon!

India in Vancouver

Granville Island - Urban market at its best!

"Vancouver is one of North America’s most under-rated tourist destinations. It is a modern, travel-friendly city with a unique mix of cultures. The relatively mild Pacific Northwest climate and an energetic restaurant and nightlife scene are other features that make this such an attractive city."– LowFares.com

Personally, the mountain-scape, the glistening water bodies, the cool mountain air, the crisp multi-cultural vibe, the extremely convenient public transport and the spectacular sights were the highlights. We planned this trip on a whim and without much forethought and were pleasantly surprised by what BC offered us and how easy it was to find our way around. We felt right at home! I came away with a longing to explore the rest of Canada.

With its global flare, international appeal and and a buzzling multicultural scene Vancouver makes the cut to be featured on Aalayam's Around the World series! Vancouver is not your run-of-the mill metropolis. There is a palpable vibrant energy at every turn!

Now, here's a few more postcards (from Victoria) this time! Victoria is the capital of British Columbia and is very British in its roots and appeal. Quaint little tea rooms and antique stores abound. The city has much to offer its visitors.

This is probably where I found a slice of heaven on earth - the majestic Butchart gardens!
Beauty of the Butchart!

Paradise on Earth?

If I were to use adjectives to describe the beauty of this place, the ones that automatically come to mind are immaculate, pristine, impressive, stupendous - you get the drift... This place awakens one's senses like no other!  The blooms, the butterflies and the birds - there is so much life and energy - it's ah-mazing!

And finally, the waterfront Victoria destination - the Inner Harbor! If you like to take a stroll, then there is no other place like Victoria's Inner Harbor. Architecturally impressive buildings, street musicians, ferry boats, plenty of photo points, food vendors - The Inner Harbor has it all!

There you go! Beautiful British Columbia brought to your doorstep by Aalayam. Hope you enjoyed this travelogue? Write to us if you are a traveler and would like to guest author and add to our bank of Around the World feature posts.

Cheers!

Design Blogger's Fab Five for the Home

Hello! How's the holiday shopping and prepping going?
Let's take a detour today from all the Christmas frenzy, shall we? How about a design/decor feature?

Ambient lighting sets the mood for a cozy evening at home - Deepa's formal living room.
Shalini of all things nice (remember her fabulous home?) invited me to be a part of this interesting series she is hosting on her blog. She has asked a bunch of us bloggers to put together a list of what we consider design must-have's for our homes (a list of five design essentials). This series titled Design Blogger's Fab Five for the Home will air on Shalini's blog throughout December. So, make sure to grab your cup of coffee and tune in to All things nice regularly-'coz she's featuring All Things Nice!

Thank you Shalini for the invitation to contribute. I have never really considered myself a "Design Blogger" and to be awarded this distinction by a blogging peer is humbling in itself. Also, to be included in a club of elite bloggers is truly an honor! Muchas Gracias! We at Aalayam, love working with other bloggers to bring resourceful posts to our readers and therefore, thank you!

While you are there, be sure to check out the first installment in this series from Bhavna of an Indian Summer- what a great list!

Today, Shalini is featuring my must-have list.  And, here is a sneak peek (well, I couldn't stop at five. I couldn't - it was simply too hard! So, I gave her six!).

Cherry picking furniture for our home was an arduous task but one that we deemed essential and paid a lot of attention to. Fittingly, furniture features on my must- have list and this is what I wrote...

"Form or function - how about both?
And I am talking furniture! You can never go wrong by investing in furniture pieces that are enduring, functionally sound and aesthetically appealing!"

I believe comfort and functionality  are as important as the ornamentation, do you?
Find out what I cannot live without when it comes to decor and design over at Shalini's. Kudos to Shalini for this initiative! What a great way to compile inspirational ideas for your home. Make sure to bookmark the series and share your thoughts with us. We love your feedback!

Did you like my list?

It's almost time to draw the curtains on 2013 and it has been a wonderful ride so far for Aalayam. Again, thank you for all your insightful comments and kind words. It is much appreciated. So, keep them coming.  I am going to sign off for the year soon with my ABSOLUTE favorite post! My Christmas post. I am taking you all home for the holidays next - please join me.

Remember this song?

"Oh, there's no place like home for the holidays,
For no matter how far away you roam-
When you long for the sunshine of a friendly gaze,
For the holidays, you can't beat home, sweet home!"

See you all in a few days at Home - virtually albeit!

Cheers!
